The new consolidated tax body needs to collect a little more than 30 billion forints each day as well as ensuring that the consolidation work continues and that the organization is improved upon and continuously developed. The body also has to measure up to the expectations of the European Union, of which Hungarian currently holds the rotating Presidency.

Ms Ildikó Vida, Director of the National Tax and Customs Office (Nemzeti Adó- és Vámhivatal, or NAV) said that the year ahead will not be an easy one, but that NAV has a duty to carry out.

Ms Vida spoke about the last year and what can be expected for 2011. She said, "last year the two office, the tax office and the customs office, together brought in a combined 9311 billion forints. They carried out 282,000 audits and uncovered more than 17,000 crimial discrepancies that would have cost the tax payer 119 billion forints."

Ms Vida was speaking at an event to mark National Customs (as in the tax) Day, which falls on 25 January.
