![]() ![]() Hungary will issue nuclear power tender in 2012
Tender will be for the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant
![]() According to Mr Tamás Fellegi, Minister of National Development, the tender calls for offers to improve and expand the Paks nuclear power plant in the south west of Hungary. The plant is owned and controlled by Magyar Villamos Művek (MVM), the only state controlled company in the electricity sector. Currently, the Paks Nuclear Power Plant is the only operating nuclear power station in Hungary and is powered by four Russian-made VVER-type reactors which provide around 40% of all the electrical power generated in Hungary. The VVER reactors were fired up in 1982 with a 30-year lifeline. The plant conducted a feasability study in 2000 which said that the the reactors will be able to safely keep working until at least 2020. Fellegi said that the project cannot be rushed because "a nuclear power plant project needs very thorough preparation." The tender will be issued in 2012 and the government will evaluate the bids in the first half of 2013. The project needs to be completed between 2020 and 2025. |
