As Budapest's Ferihegy airport expands, operators are looking into how to improve the transport betweeen the airport and the city centre. Like London, Paris, and several other European cities, Budapest is looking to build a high-speed rail link that would allow passengers to reduce journey times to the airport to 15 minutes or less.

According to Hungarian business daily, "Napi Gazdagság," a joint group is being created that would example how such a transport link could be made a reality.  The joint group would combine both Hungarian and Chinese players and would be able to carry 8-10 million passengers per year between the centre of Budapest and the airport.

The project has been mentioned numerous times over the last decade, but this is the first time a feasibility study will be carried out.  It is uncertain whether the rail link would require a new train-station or whether the high-speed link would run to the Budapest Déla, Nyugati or Keleti stations.

Over the last five years, China has invested heavily in high-speed train services and has unveiled some of the fastest trains the earth has ever seen.  On 3 December 2010, a Chinese train travelling between Zaozhuang City of Shandong Province and Bengbu City in Anhui Province set a new world record for unmodified commercial use when it reached a speed of 486.1 kph.
