The year's first wine has been bottled in Badacsony, a town famous for its vineyards located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton.  While it might seem very early to bottle wine, this type of wine is a Hungarian speciality.

The grapes are key to allowing a winemaker to produce such an "early" wine.  The Csabagyöngye grapes used in this Badacsony wine can only be found in this region and are considered to be a Hungarikum, which is a term used to describe anything that is unique to Hungary.

The harvested wine is not transferred to barrels as is usual.  Instead, after the grapes are harvested and processed for a month they are immediately stored in bottles.

Winemakers based around Lake Balaton do not expect 2010 to be a very profitable year.  The expectation is that there will be a third less wine produced than usual, which will hurt many winemakers' bottom lines.  In other regions, this year's weather has reduced the harvest even more.

The grapes being harvested at the moment are muscat and riesling.
