"The poor man's bank" will approve its first loan this week
![]() The first bank dedicated to the poor will work with its customers to provide loans worth 400 million forints over two-and-a-half years. The program is being run by Raiffeisen Bank and is designed to help 400 or so businesses. Individually, the bank is intent on providing loans that fall between 300,000 forints and 1 million forints. The loans will be provided on trust to allow those without equity or property to qualify. The requirement for the success of the program is that the loan is used to help the company or individual turn a profit. The program hopes to persuade those members of society who work within the black market, or who are unemployed and living in depressed conditions, to consider taking part in the program. The program's believes that many Roma will be able to take advantage of this opportunity to create a better standard of living for themselves. The project is backed by the Polgár Foundation and an organization called Opportunities for Civilians. The initiative was developed, in large part, by social workers. |
