Time travel is not yet a possibility, but one museum in the capital is giving visitors a glimpse into the not-so-distant past.  An exhibition titled "Paintings of Pest and Buda from the 18th-19th centuries" is on in the Castle district of Buda and showcasing a plethora of fascinating landscapes of Hungary's largest city.

The exhibition opened in the middle of December in the Budapesti Történeti Múzeum located in the castle district.  Comprised almost entirely of landscapes, the collection on show provides a fascinating glimpse into the architecture of the age as well as a look into how people then lived.

While the paintings provide a rose-tinted view of life in the 18th and 19th centuries - gritty and realism are two words that you would not associate with this show - the paintings are beautiful by themselves and together give visitors a warm and comfortable look at the age.

Taken as a whole, the exhibition shows how the city of Budapest began its metaporphosis from two neighbouring towns into the unified cultural centre it has become.  Perhaps then it is fitting that the exhibition iis being held in one of the wings of the Royal Palace Building.

The Royal Palace can be reached via the 16 bus from Déak Tér, the Vár busz (castle Bus) which leaves from Moszkva Tér, by the funicular railway on the Buda side of the Chain Bridge, or for those who enjoy walking uphill, by foot.

The exhibition runs until the middle of February.
