Mr Dávid Vitézy, spokesperson for the Budapest Transport Company (BKV), says that from Sunday the BKV staff will be actively fining those who smoke in bus stops, tram stops or trolley stops.

The new rule was proposed by Budapest Mayor István Tarlós in a meeting on 15 December that would ban smokers from lighting up in any BKV related spot, i.e. tram, bus, trolley, funicular, or regional light railway (HÉV).

Vitézy said that over the first ferw days only warnings will be given to those found smoking in stops.  However, after an initial grace period, anyone found smoking in a stop who doesn't either put out their cigarette/cigarillo/cigar and then leave the stop will be liable to pay an on-the-spot 30,000 forint fine.  Depending on the circumstances, the fine could be as much as 50,000 forints.

The BKV is working to put up "no smoking" warning signs, but it has no managed to label every stop yet. By Sunday the BKV says that it will have 5000 stops signposted so that commuters know that smoking will no longer be tolerated.

The actual area where smoking is prohibited varies depending on the type of public transport the stop services.  For buses and trolleys, the no smoking zone will be 2m x 12m or 2m x 18m.  If the stop can accomodate two buses or trolleys, the no smoking zone will be 2m x 36m.  For trams, the no smoking zone is slightly shorter, at 2m x 35m, while the largest no smoking zone will be set out for the light railway system (HÉV). There the no smoking zone will be 2m x 120m.
