Travel agencies are working together to bring everyone back from the country
![]() There are still several thousand tourists in Cairo as the civil unrest in Egypt continues unabated. Many airlines have already suspended regular flights to the country, as they wait for the country to stabilize. While many tourists remain stranded, the news for Hungarian visitors is better: according to travel agencies, all Hungarians will be brought home by the end of the weekend. Egypt is one of the more popular travel destinations for Hungarians, as it blends value-for-money with fabulous destinations and a wonderful climate. It is also relatively close, so flights there are short. However with the civil unrest continuing to fester in the country, and the corresponding government crackdown that came with it, many Hungarians have found themselves stranded. Many flights have been cancelled, travel within the country is partially restricted, and the authorities have blocked mobile phone networks to prevent protestors from organizing. According to the Hungaruan government, there are still some 450 Hungarian citizens in the country, but the Hungarian Embassy in Cairo says that they are all safe and accounted for. Travel agencies have cancelled bus and coach tours within the country and are gearing up to bring all the tourists home this weekend. Ms Judit Molnár is spokesperson for the Association of Hungarian Travel Agents. Speaking on DunaTV's Közbeszéd program, Molnár said, "we will have flights going out to Egypt on Saturday and Sunday, and they'll be bringing all of the Hungarians home." Hungary is not the only country in this region to be taking steps to bring their citizens home. Slovakia, Hungary's neighbour to the north, is mirroring what the Hungarian government is doing. The Slovakian Foreign Ministry, speaking through Spokesperson Lubos Schwarzbacher said, "we have 30 people who have indicated they want to come home. We remain in constant communication with the agencies here and their partners in Egypt, so we can help them as soon as possible." Many tourists remain stranded at Cairo's International Airport, with thousands waiting on flights to leave the country. Many are happy to jump on which ever flight is available, just to be sure they get out of harm's way. The United Kingdom and Germany have issued travel warnings to their citizens who are thinking of travelling to the region, while the United States has gone one step further. Besides their Embassy staff in the capital, the US has recommended that US citizens leave Egypt as soon as possible. ![]() |
