![]() In giving the annual State of the Nation address, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that 2010 was the year of unity, 2011 will be the year when the new Constitution comes into play in Hungary, and in 2012 Hungary will be in a position to lift off. He expects 2012 to be the year that the unsteady ship that has been the Hungarian economy is righted. Orbán also said that 2013 will be the year that Hungary launches skywards and that by 2014 the electorate will have tangible evidence that the strict measures put in place by the Fidesz-KDNP government will have worked. The Prime Minister also discussed the new constitutional changes that the government is planning to introduce. He said that the new constitution would embody the Hungarian spirit and would signify a move away from the old era that crippled Hungarians towards a better and brighter future for the country. Orbán went into more detail regarding the constitution, and said that the constitution that exists is not a truly Hungarian one because it is "based on a Soviet model" and that "even though great lawyers worked on it, it was created under duress." He stressed that although present Hungarian life has been built on the 1956 revolution, there is not one mention of the uprising in the present constitution. Speaking about the country's economic state, Orbán was spent time discussing the huge debt that Hungary is labouring under and said that in order for the nation to get back on track, Hungary would need every person that can work, to work. He stressed that most of the problems that Hungary is facing derive from the enormous debt that it is saddled with. Prime Minister Orbán spoke of the flat tax, new bank duties and the introduction of recession taxes. He said that by saving the pensions system, the government had taken the first steps against the recession, and that the government needed as many people capable of working back in the workplace. While Prime Minister Orbán was keen to stress that the governments policies would pay off, he also said that unless Hungary is able to finish its process of renewal, the past would return and "the sky will fall on our head." He said, "first we will be hit by the avalanche that is the national debt, and then we will lose the chance to recover for years to come." However, he remained optimistic that the country would be able to endure the changes needed to pull itself out of the mess it is in. He said, "if we are able to win the fight, then we will once again be first in Europe in several things, just like we are when we compare systems of taxation among European countries, then we will be able to ensure the happiness and prosperity of every honest working Hungarian." Prime Minister Orbán finished his speech by imploring Hungarians everywhere to do what they can, saying "2011 is the year of renewal. It's a new beginning, and something we must fight for. So let's go, Hungarians, and let's go, Hungary!" |
