One of the conversations took place in a local restaurant, where Ágoston says that he was sitting with three colleagues and eating and talking.  He has no idea who made the recording or how it was made but it was not made with the permission of any of the participants.

On the recording, the participants can be heard talking with Marica Németh, a candidate in the upcoming local council elections who has the support of the Fidesz-KDNP alliance.  They also talk about the current mayor Imre Aller and how a the State Audit Office would help in his "replacement."  What is clear from the recordings is that those speaking expected to have the support of the Fidesy politicians in getting this done.

On Monday, Fidesz distanced itself from the recording and those people on it.  The Party is not sure whether those caught on tape are real people caught in a real situation or actors reading from a script.

Tamás Ágoston told the paper "basically they just bugged us, either with some sort of special cell phone or with better equipment.  I'm disappointed that opponents are trying to make political gains by listening in on private conversations."

Ágoston was unwilling to answer questions from the paper regarding his mention of the Audit Office.

Besides Ágoston, another voice that can be heard on the tape is that of Marica Németh who has refused to comment on the tape.  She has released a statement together with Ágoston saying that they had discussed bringing the illegal behaviour of some members of the council to the attention of the authorities.   The statement said that they "regret the way in which this comes across because our intentions were honest, namely  to ensure that local government puts the citizen's money to good use and is accountable."

Mayor Imre Aller and Csab Molnár, head of the MSZP party in Győr-Moson-Sopron county, held a press conference of Monday where he denounced Fidesz.  He called this attempt at blackmail the worst he has seen in twenty years and said that it shows what lengths Fidesz will go to.

Also on Monday, Fidesz distanced itself from the recordings and those whose voices were captured. Lajos Kósa emphasized that Fidesz rejects those accusations and that "no one can interfere with the timetable of the State Audit Office of Hungary."

Kósa added that those politicians and officials mentioned on the recordings are not Fidesz representatives but rather members of Összefogás Kónyért (United for Kóny) who are involved in the upcoming local elections.  Due to this scandal, Fidesz will prohibit Összefogás Kónyért from using the Fidesz logo in any of their materials before, or during, the elections.

The National Audit Office has also made it clear that  the way the office works is not influenced by individuals.
