Bakers in Romania will increase the price of their loaves come tomorrow, but are defending their actions because they say that they are having to pay far more for basic materials than before.

Romanian bakers say that since December 2010, the price of flour has increased by more than 50% and the other ingredients they use have also gone up by at least 30%.

Speaking to DunaTV, Sándor Szilágyi, CEO and founder of Fapicom, a large bread producer in Harghita County, said that the while consumers are unhappy that the price of bread is to go up, it is just one key item whose price is set to increase.

The most popular loaf sold by Fapicom is the simple white loaf. Customers are saying that they are being pinched at both ends: not only is their income not rising, but the price of everyday foodstuffs is going up.

It is not only bread prices that will go up tomorrow. Prices are expected to rise across the baord, with some food items going up by as much as 33%.
