Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Ágoston Székelyhidi, the writer and scholar who died at his home in Hajdúböszörmény on Tuesday.

János Vezendi, Hajdu-Bihar County Police Chief, says that the circumstances of Székelyhidi's death were out of the ordinary, but he refused to give any details about what the Police have discovered.

Székelyhidi was born in 1935 and was one of the key figures involved in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.  While a student at Debrecen, Székelyhidi read out the 20-point list of demands that the students had come up with.

He became a member of the local revolutionary committee, for which he was later tried and imprisoned.  He started his time behind bars in 1957.

Ágoston Székelyhidi was one of the founding members of the MDF (Magyar Demokrata Forum), the first democratically elected political party to take office after the fall of communism.

He wrote a play to mark the 20th anniversary of the regime change in 1989.  Titled "Doom," it was performed last November on consecutive days in Debrecen and Nagyvárad to commemorate the revolution.
