The Hungarian President says that he will listen to proposals and recommendations
![]() President Pál Schmitt has promised that the Hungarian government will look at any recommendations that the European Union has in connection with Hungary's new Media Act. In an interview published in Belgian newspaper La Libre Belgique, Schmitt says that the European Commission has raised three objections against the legislation and has proposed three amendments to it. In the in-depth interview, Schmitt also spoke about his unique position as President of Hungary, where he not only represents Hungarians who were born and raised inside Hungary, but also those ethnic Hungarians who live outside of the borders of the country. When asked whether Hungarians who have dual-citizenship should be allowed to vote in elections even if they don't live in the country or even pay taxes there, Schmitt said that Hungary wants to extend the same rights that are offered to those who hold dual citizenship in other European countries. He mentioned Portugal, Italy, Croatia, Romania, and the Czech Republic, where those who hold a passport are allowed to participate in elections. He also touched on the topic of pride in being Hungarian. While putting your hand on your heart and swearing allegiance to the flag is considered patriotic in the United States, in Hungary it seems that those who do the same thing are accused of being nationalist. Schmitt said that any country should be proud of its national identity. Schmitt said, "we have an ancient history and our language makes us very unique linguistic island - no one understands us and no one speaks Hungarian! Along with our pride, we must continue to respect the patriotism of other countries and nations. We do not feel superior to any other nation, but we do not feel inferior either."
