With the first race of the season appoximately one month away, the competitive future of Gábor Talmácsi in motorbike racing is still up in the air.  Reports from Hungary indicate that that former world champion is leaning towards turning down the Pedercini team, while the news out of Australia is that the team is still looking to fill its one remaining spot.

While the stories aren't mutually exclusive, the Hungarian rider is quickly running out of time to make a decision to ride.  He has made it clear that he is willing to listen to offers and has hinted that he does have several offers in front of him, but he lack of testing has raised concerns with his Hungarian fan base.

Balázs Zarándok is a member of the Talmácsi fan club, and is concerned that the rider might miss out on the season if he doesn't make his mind up quickly.  He said, "Talma hasn't received that many offers this off-season, and unless he picks the Pedercini team, I don't think he'll ride this season.  Or if he does, it'll be like this year when he joined a not-very-good team halfway through the season."

"I'm nervous for him, but I still think we can expect to see him on a bike this season," he added.

Talmácsi himself has been quiet on the latest developments.  His website hasn't been updated in a while but he did answer some questions after testing the Pedercini bike in Sepang, Malaysia.

Talmácsi said that while he enjoyed his time testing the bike, it became clear pretty quickly that the bike does not yet have what it takes to give the Hungarian rider a chance to get on the podium.  He said, "we were on the track with a factory Kawasaki and when we were side by side the differences were obvious."

Team Pedercini is still looking to fill their one remaining rider's spot and look to be holding out for the Hungarian.  Were he to accept the position, he would team up with reigning Australian Superbike champion Bryan Staring at the opening round of the 2011 World Superbike Championships.

The race will be held over the weekend of 25-27 February at Phillip Island in Australia.  Talmácsi has raced at the track 11 times.  His best finish was a third place in 2008 when racing for Aprilia in the 125cc category.

Talmácsi has said that he will have to decide on his future this week. At the moment it seems as though he is leaning towards turning down the Pedercini offer.  However, if he turns it down, there is no guarantee another team will step forward this late into preparations to offer him a ride.  And if he does call everyone's bluff by holding out for a better offer, and then doesn't get one, will last year have been the last time we saw the Hungarian in a competitive race?
